British or American?
Do you prefer British or American accent? I love British all these endings without 'r' and long sounds are just great. One of my professors speaks almost pure British ('almost' because I think that no one besides native speakers can speak their language without any mistakes in pronunciation) and I could listen to him all the time I try my best to achive correct pronunciation in British, but sometimes during conversation you forget about all these sounds Nevertheless I had 4,5 from phonetics so I'm not the worst
So what about you? British or American? |

Definitely British! So sophisticated…
Still there IS something about that American accent that makes native Polish speakers sound better when using it, doesn’t it? There seems to be more possible variations in pronouncing American English –it’s easier to get away with all kinds of funny sounds foreigners come up with and still sound pretty fine. British is much more challenging. |

Pure English sounds so...wise But unfortunatlly it's not very common to hear it in the street. I like pure English, but hate the way most of English use their language. Anyway i prefer Britain than America, including the way of speaking |

I LOVE AMERICAN ENGLISH - it is extremely diversed, but I'm definitely more into the so-called General American (if it exists) than into Southern American.

Oh I love British. But my British is faaaaaaaaaar from being perfect... A lot of work left.
Why British? It sounds so posh and sexy nothing more attracting than a nice man having a great British accent (except my boyfirend of course). Girls, have you ever heard people from Glasgow? It's such a nightmare ! RP is the easiest to be understood from all the British dialects ( of course only for people who started learning English with listening to RP ) but it is also very hard to find someone speaking RP ... |

what is british or american accent?
I've heard only about British Pronunciation - so called RP and General American(GA or AmE) as Berry mentioned. accent is definitely something else. Coming back to the point - RP rullez. GA seems to me a little bit dirty. with all this "r" sound within words. RP is much harder for foreign speaker to adjust to, but worth practicing.

Fortunately, I haven't got such problem.
I have both RP & GA speakers at my college, but I am supposed to speak RP only. But generally I uderstand GA as well. It's advantage of studying english in Poland. I'm afraid, only one. Don't you think, that GA is easier to speak than RP?

RP does not mean British English. RP is spoken by only about 8 or less % of population and that'a why, when people go to UK they do not understand a word. It is called Queen English or BBC. Listen to Tony Blair that's RP What you here in the streets of London or anywhere else are hundrets of variations of UK English. It's definately different from AE. And what is widely spoken by the users of of English as the 2nd lg is so called Middle- Atlantic, where AE and BE meet. I do like BE, but AE is easier. There not so many vowels in AE. And what we Polish people speak is Polglish

Not all Polish people speak Polglish, some of them can speak really gooooood English, but they have to make a lot of effort to do it. What is more, Polish people are cosidered as those, whose accent is the most similar to the accent of native speaker of English. It can be easily heard when Polish people are speaking with Filipinian or Frech or Italian or...........

czikuś: RP is spoken by 2% or less British people and this is a standard British pronunciation. Standard does not mean that this is the most, let's say, popular pronunciation

How can stansard be 2%? Shouldn't standard mean average, most common? Why, if RP is spoken by few people, we are at all talking about it? Let's have more modern attitude towards English - speak how you wish, as long as others can understand you!

I love British accent! It's my favourite. But when I'm saying "British accent" I mean the proper British not the one you can nowadays hear on streets. I think thah for Poles American accent is easier to learn but I just don't know it as well as British. I also like to watch British TV just to hear they great, beautiful accent But I think I will never master it :/

Some of you guys are talking about accent and pronunciation, so I'm confused between these topics or points.Yeah confused, because I consider them as two totally different topics. I like American accent ,but English(british) accent is more clear than American accent suring talking. But for me it is not a big deal in undertanding these two accents, though I have speakers in my college who are from New Zealand, Austarlia, USA,South Africa,UK, Ireland, Germany, France,est..
In America they use the word (CONR) and in UK they say (MAZE), I always say (Eraser) it is American, but in UK they use (Rubber), so this is the first difference between these two. The second difference is that UK poeple write (colour, swimming, travelling, neighbour, est..) , but in America poeple write like this (color, swiming, traveling, neighbor, est..), why it is like that?! (Maybe because they want to make their life much easier by removing the letters, changing some English rules and grammer) <== JUST KIDDING about this point Nowadays, foreign poeple are focusing how much they know english , it is not about accent or even pronunciation. Even some native American citizen or even British are not that perfect. These are my opinion about these points. I dunno, probably some of you might disagree with me. As we know every person has own point of view

i don't know australian people, just one guy from New Zealand (but i think it's the same) and his english is so funny! (i mean, i just find it funny coz i cope with irish and american people every day so...) i'll give you some samples: bread - he would say 'brid' , check - he'd say 'czik'. in the very beginning irish was so strange for me, they say 'op' instead up. sample: I live opstairs (they certainly would write upstairs) but i prefer american 'version' of english because I talk to american people every single day and i don't find any problems with their accent.
