I have been learning English for 16 years (I started in September, 1990, when I was in the fifth class of primary school) and I still have reasons for learning. I have been an English language teacher for a few years. When I was in primary and secondary school, I was learning a lot on my own because I wanted to know as much as possible. I enjoyed learning this language from the very beginning and it was quite easy for me. I had only 3 English lessons a week and I felt it wasn't sufficient to have a good command of English. However, what helped me the most was studying the English philology. I became fluent in using this language through the constant work during practical classes for several hours a day. My studies were difficult but I succeeded. As they say, 'No gain without pain' and 'Practice makes perfect'.

I've been learning english for .... nearly 8 years. It was hard at the beginning but it seems to be quite easy for me, now. I think lessons with a native speaker is a good idea especially i've never had any i don't think small talks with my M. could be called lessons
I thihk I need to improve my english because i'd love to study in uk. I've been there a few times and I didn't have realy problems with communuication, I guess I'm not pleased enough, though. Probably I will move there in 1,5years

I have been learning English since I was 7 or 8 years old. My parents made me do it. It was very useful when I was in Poland, now I speak another language every day. Due to my work I spoke English almost every day, here it is more difficult because I have to speak Danish. I started having problems with putting words in the right order, because in Danish it is very complicated ( so called ordstilling ) and it influences my English. It makes me sad, but so is life I guess. I DO hope I will never lose it, because with all my respect to Danish language and culture, it is not in any way the international language, one can only speak it with Danes and some foreigners who lived here for some time and had to learn it.

English is a ticket to the world. Good luck and don`t give it up

BTW - I used Present Perfect Continuous because I am still trying to keep in touch with English. It isn`t as easy as it was in Poland, but as they say: ``use it or lose it``. English philology and many years of experience won`t help if you don`t practise.

Ok, so I'm the next one English-speaking girl.
I've been learning English for almost 12 years. When I was a child I used to watch a lot of Cartoon Network and I have been in England three times (in years 2006, 2005, 2004).
I suppose I'm doing quite well. My mock Matura Exam result-91%.
I'm proud of my pronounciation.

'Practice makes perfect'.

First I saw this sentence at Phonetic classes during learning 'P' sound.
Practice makes perfect
When we pronounced this sound we had to split the air
It sounds like spliting the air It's funny

According to the topic.

I've been learning English language for 10 years.
Now, Im student of English philology.
I think I'll be teaching English through my whole life

But I have still little problems with thinking in English. It's ropey case, especially when Im going to be an English teacher.

Annemon!!! Tell me, please, what should I do to eliminate my problem.

Today lecturer was giving us a lot of sentences, in all conditionals and we had to change them to e.g Ist conditional to 3rd, 2nd to 3rd and so on....

I couldnt think, I must see sentences, write them on paper but we couldnt write them on it, we should have told right sentence using imagination

I've been learning English for 11 years. Now I am a student of English philology. I try to improve my language skills everyday, but I think that it'll never be enough for me.I can't imagine myself in as a teacher, I'd rather be a translator. I can teach one person, or group of 5 for example but I'm to nervous or impatient to be a "normal" teacher

Hi! I remember my phonetics classes quite well, although I had them in 1998 and 1999. They were very interesting but also quite difficult for me. Our lecturer was very demanding and firm. It was impossible to get his signature in the index if you got below 70%. 69% was still too little. I understand "splitting the air" as aspiration - uttering consonants like 'p' and 't' with a kind of pressure.
As far as your problems with thinking in English are concerned, I would advise you to start with expanding your vocabulary. Do some vocabulary tests (probably you will have many opportunities during classes called 'practical use of English' ). Do as many translations as you can, even of short and simple texts. Try to do some translation exercises at any occasion and everyday, e.g. to translate your each thought or news on TV from Polish into English. In my case such continuous practice worked. I often think in two languages, Polish and English. When I think something in Polish, an English version comes to my mind instantly and the other way round. I think you just need more time and practice as "Rome wasn't built in one day".

Do you mean you had Spanish with Spanish native? Cause if you had English with a guy from Spain it means that he was just a Spanish knowing English. Not a native though.

BTW. Hi,
I've been learning Engl. for 15 or 16 years (don't remember exactly). Now I'm an English phil. student. Though I'm teaching now, I don't want to be a teacher. Don't want to be a translator or interpretator either.

I'm interested in the cognitive side of the lang. The practical everyday use.

What else? Someone mentioned having problems with thinking in English. I'm the opposite case. I think in Engl. most of the times. Just happens.

It was an example to show that native speaker as teacher is a great opportunity to use knowladge in practice. She or He learn us not only about language ,also we can hear about their culture, habitions etc. Lessons are usually more unformal then with polish teacher

Just asking. You see, I have a teacher from Portugal who has the status of a native at my institute. The saddest thing is that he's on a lower level than we are. His lessons are a complete waste of time (though sometimes funny, mostly thanks to the teacher).

I know what you mean by enjoying lessons carried by natives. They are far more interesting and casual. Not to mention that you have less stress, cause we, a nation, have the the tendency to pick all the mistakes and flaws in someone's work. And we are taught the most complicated grammatical structures (of course then our knowledge of these is constantly tested). And I just wonder if I ever had an occasion to hear a native using passive voice or the most complicated versions of reported speech.
